FHIP funds are used to increase compliance with the Fair Housing Act and with substantially equivalent fair housing laws administered by State and local government agencies under the Fair Housing Assistance Program. The following are the three types of FHIP funding available:
Private Enforcement Initiative (PEI) grants assist private, tax-exempt fair housing enforcement organizations in the investigation and enforcement of alleged violations of the Fair Housing Act and substantially equivalent fair housing laws. Grantees are Fair Housing Enforcement Organizations with at least one year of experience in enforcement related activities and Qualified Fair Housing Enforcement Organizations with at least two years of experience in enforcement related activities.
Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI) grants assist organizations that inform the public about their rights and obligations under the Fair Housing Act and substantially equivalent fair housing laws. Grantees are public or private not for profit institutions or other public or private entities that carry out programs to prevent or eliminate discriminatory housing practices.
Fair Housing Organization Initiative (FHOI) grants assist organizations to build the capacity of an organization to become a viable fair housing enforcement organization and establish new fair housing enforcement organizations in unserved or underserved areas of the country, especially in those areas with Limited English Proficiency
